Pickling, or liming, enhances wooden surfaces by giving them a soft white tone and revealing the wood grain. For this technique you need liming paste or wax, clear-paste wax, a wire brush, and steel wool.
1. Before applying the liming paste or wax, you need to open the grain of the wood. Rub the wood with a wire brush in the direction of the grain.
2. Place the liming paste or wax on the steel wool and rub it into the wood grain using a circular motion. Work in areas of about 1/2 sq yd (1/2 sq m) at a time.
3. When the paste or wax is dry (after several minutes), rub on a fine, clear-paste wax with a lint-free cloth to remove the excess. Buff with a lint-free cloth.
